I believe it said he was there for a few days?Is it true that Jesus went down to Hell after he died to preach? If so why in the world would he do that?
Question: ';Did Jesus go to hell between His death and resurrection?';
Answer: Did Jesus’ soul go to Hell during the time in between His death and resurrection? There is a great deal of confusion in regards to this question. This concept comes primarily from the Apostles' Creed, which states, “He descended into Hell.” There are also a few Scriptures which, depending on how they are translated, describe Jesus going to “Hell.” In studying this issue, it is important to first understand what the Bible teaches about the “realms” of the dead.
In the Hebrew Scriptures, the word used to described the realm of the dead is ';Sheol.'; It simply means the ';place of the dead'; or the ';place of departed souls/spirits.'; The New Testament Greek word that is used for hell is ';Hades,'; which also refers to “the place of the dead.” Other Scriptures in the New Testament indicate that Sheol / Hades is a temporary place, where souls are kept as they await the final resurrection and judgment. Revelation 20:11-15 gives a clear distinction between the two. Hell (the lake of fire) is the permanent and final place of judgment for the lost. Hades is a temporary place. So, no, Jesus did not go to “Hell” because “Hell” is a future realm, only put into effect after the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15).
Sheol / Hades is a realm with two divisions (Matthew 11:23; 16:18; Luke 10:15; 16:23; Acts 2:27-31), the abodes of the saved and the lost. The abode of the saved was called “Paradise” and “Abraham's bosom.” The abodes of the saved and the lost are separated by a ';great gulf fixed'; (Luke 16:26). When Jesus ascended to Heaven, He took the occupants of Paradise (believers) with Him (Ephesians 4:8-10). The lost side of Sheol / Hades has remained unchanged. All unbelieving dead go there awaiting their final judgment in the future. Did Jesus go to Sheol / Hades? Yes, according to Ephesians 4:8-10 and 1 Peter 3:18-20.
Some of the confusion has arisen from such passages as Psalm 16:10-11, ';For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption....Thou wilt show me the path of life...'; “Hell” is not a correct translation of this verse. A correct reading would be “the grave” or “Sheol.” Jesus said years later on the Cross to the thief beside Him, ';Today, thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.'; His body was in the tomb; His soul/spirit went to the “Paradise” realm of Sheol / Hades. He then removed all the righteous dead from Paradise and took them with Him to Heaven. Unfortunately, in many translations of the Bible, translators are not consistent, or correct, in how they translate the Hebrew and Greek words for “Sheol,” “Hades,” and “Hell.”
Some have the viewpoint that Jesus went to “Hell” or the suffering side of Sheol / Hades in order to further be punished for our sins. This idea is completely unbiblical! It was the death of Jesus on the Cross and His suffering in our place that sufficiently provided for our redemption. It was His shed blood that substantiated our own cleansing from sin (1 John 1:7-9). As He hung there on the Cross, He took the sin burden of the whole human race upon Himself. ';He became sin for us,'; 2 Corinthians 5:21 states: ';For He hath made Him to be sin for us Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.'; This imputation of sin helps us understand Christ's struggle in the garden of Gethsemane with the cup of sin which would be poured out upon Him on the cross.
When Jesus cried upon the Cross, ';Oh, Father, why have You forsaken Me?'; it was then He was separated from the Father because of the sin poured out upon Him. As He gave up His spirit, He said, ';Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.'; His suffering was completed in our stead. His soul/spirit went to the Paradise side of Hades. Jesus did not go to Hell. Jesus’ suffering ended the moment He died. The payment for sin was paid. He then awaited the resurrection of His body and His return to His glory in His ascension. Did Jesus go to Hell? No. Did Jesus go to Sheol / Hades? Yes.

I Peter 3:18-20
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
1 Pet. 4: 6
6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
The two passages above from Peter indicate that Christ went to the spirits in prison that they might have the gospel and be judged like those that had the gospel here on earth. However, there is another scripture that indicates that there is a great gulf fixed between those in prison and those in paradise. What Christ did during His time in the spirit world in between His death and resurrection, was to organize the spirits in Paradise to do the missionary work to those in Prison. Christ did not go Himself to them but vicariously sent messengers to do that work, thus making salvation possible to those that died in their sins, speaking specifically of those in the days of Noah but extending that principle to all that have lived and died since then as well.
Yes. Read for your answer.
1Pe 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
1Pe 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
1Pe 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
Good question.
Mankind's common grave has been translated into the word ';hell'; so when it says that Jesus went to the grave ( which makes more sense) the translators use hell and lead people to believe that Jesus went to hell.
Collier’s Encyclopedia (1986, Vol. 12, p. 28) says concerning “Hell”: “First it stands for the Hebrew Sheol of the Old Testament and the Greek Hades of the Septuagint and New Testament. Since Sheol in Old Testament times referred simply to the abode of the dead and suggested no moral distinctions, the word ‘hell,’ as understood today, is not a happy translation.”
No, Jesus died and after three days rose again. Jesus did not go to Hell....that's just crazy.....Where does the Bible say that....
When we say the apostle's creed...we say ';He descended into the dead and on the third day He rose again';....';dead'; meaning He died in the physical, He never went to Hell, the whole reason He died was to save us from it.....He's God, the Son remember...
In the three days before he was raised from the dead, he went to the lower parts of the earth to led captivity captive, which means he went to let all the saved people that died before he paid the sin debt free so they could go on to heaven and he did go to hell where the devil is to show him that he had the keys to heaven and to hell.
I always wondered about that too. I know the answer. He died on the cross and went down to Hell for three days to free the souls of the good that had died since the time of Adam and Eve. That's where they went. Moses and the apostles and all the good ones. They didn't suffer but lingered there waiting for him to come. So he freed them and they went up to Heaven with him and from that point on if you believe in Jesus and accept him as your personal saviour then you will go to Heaven too.
Jesus descended into hell after death. Even the Apostle's Creed mentions this. Protestant reformers Martin Luther and John Calvin believed and taught this as well. Jesus, while on the cross, was made sin so that we might be made the righteousness of God. Since He died with all of the sins of the world on him, this allowed Him access into hell to set those in captivity free. While there, He took the keys of death away from Satan and now has all power in Heaven and Earth. I even believe that while in hell, He suffered for a little while. The Bible says He was loosed from the pains of death. When you are dead, you feel no pain so what is this talking about? I believe that Jesus may have suffered in hell fire, at least for a little while.
Because he wasn't able to follow his own teachings and will burn there for eternity:
';But anyone who says 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.'; (Jesus) Mat 5:22
';You fools!'; (Jesus) Luke 11:40
';You blind fools!'; (Jesus) Mat 23:17
';How foolish you are'; (Jesus) Luke 24:25

yes/ to give those people that one chance to be saved. its the only time recorded in scripture people have a second chance./it was during the 3 days between jesus death and resurrection.
according to what i learned (ex-christian), the gates of heaven were closed so he went into hell for a time, and through his resurrection opened the gates for all 8D
jesus went to hell to get the keys from satan. He also went to hell (died) so we won't have to die, we can now live with Him forever and ever.
The Scriptures do not tell us that Jesus Christ had ever visited Hell! I think it is a fallacy and misinterpretation.
He went to destroy Satan and his works, He took away the keys to death, hell and the grave for you and I
I don't recall reading about Jesus visiting Los Angeles.
Nope. He said to the thief on the cross, ';This day you will be WITH me in Paradise.';
Yes he did.
some catholics believe that but that was a man made story
The Bible says nothing like that. So there's the name of that tune.
Jesus remained in the grave for three days(72 hours) from sunset wednesday to sunset saturday..He was not in hell because such a place only exist in the minds of man..It is not an actual place... God bless.
You've been listening to the fundies again.
He wanted to party after the Passion and Hell had all the best clubs.
