I heard Jesus had outlawed interest in banking in Jerusalem because it placed an unnecessary burden on his people and the ';money changer'; had him crucified because of that. Then the money changers interest rates and Fractional Reserve banking practices flourished after his death. Now 2000 years later the evils of interest rates and Fractional Reserve banking is what is enslaving the world with perpetual debt.Is it true Jesus prohibited Christians from borrowing at interest?
Nah; that's a muzzle thing.
It's why so many Jews went into money-lending; it was the one of the very few things the authorities of their 'host' countries allowed Jews to do.
~Is it true Jesus prohibited Christians from borrowing at interest?
No.
Christianity prohibits usury -- which is lending money to a financially desperate person and charging interest so as to capitalize on his/her misfortune.
Nowadays, of course, most loans don't involve such desperate situations. They involve borrowing someone else's money to purchase a discretionary item or service -- in which case, the lender has every right to charge a fee for his/her lent money.
That's not usury, and it's not the kind of thing that Christ would have prohibited.
By the way, Jesus turned over the money-changers in the temple not only because they were ripping people off, but they were doing it right in God's House. That does not at all mean that he';outlawed interest in banking.';
.
Actually it was Moses not Jesus who made that prohibition. The Christians and Muslims both got it from the Jews. All three of them went on to create legalistic arguments allowing them to ignore it at will, although the arguments were different in each case.
we can only apply Jesus's morality upon ourself. as far as banking instututions, we just have to pay it if we want a loan. Woe to him tho' who is in charge of usuary in their own banking institution.
I agree. And it is only Islam that is following the teachings of Jesus now..The Quran has prohibited usary (interest) yet the christians ignore this.
