John 11th chapter 1 to 45 tells about this story.
verse John 11:4 and 6 make us to believe that Jesus allowed Lazurus to die because He wanted to see if a man could lead a healthy life risen back from dead after 3 days .(He know that He must go thru death before coming alive?
pls help me with your viewsWhy Jesus allowed Lazarus to die ? Is it true Jesus tested whether someone could come alive after 4 days ? ?
Your close in your surmise. John 11:4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
John 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
John 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
Notice in chapter 42 Jesus answers your question, ';...but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. ';
Jesus didn't need any proof of anything, because He already knows the power of God, but for the faith of others to know that God has sent Him into the world, and to glorify His Father.Why Jesus allowed Lazarus to die ? Is it true Jesus tested whether someone could come alive after 4 days ? ?
He waited 3 days because of the Jewish traditions that said that someone could not truly be considered dead until 3 days...thus no one could claim, even according to Jewish law and tradition (which he observed) that Lazarus was not dead before he was raised from the dead....
Bar Kappara: ';Until three days [after death] the soul keeps on returning to the grave, thinking that it will go back [into the body]; but when it sees that the facial features have become disfigured, it departs and abandons it [the body].';
The full force of mourning lasts for three days. Why? Because [for that length of time] the shape of the face is recognizable, even as we have learnt in the Mishnah: Evidence [to prove a man's death] is admissible only in respect of the full face, with the nose, and only [by one who has seen the corpse] within three days [after death].
From the Semahot:
One may go out to the cemetery for three days to inspect the dead for a sign of life, without fear that this smacks of heathen practice. For it happened that a man was inspected after three days, and he went on to live twenty-five years; still another went on to have five children and died later. (8.1)
Thus, in Jewish tradition, it was considered possible for a soul to reunite with its body within three days but not after that as sometime on the third day the soul realized the body was rotting, and then departed
Death is considered the ultimate bioogical disaster, so Jesus shows people that even this He can overcome, because, as He says in John 10:38 Jesus states
';If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.';
He shows people even death is nothing for Him to defeat and proves His point in vv.25-26 saying
';I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?';
In fact in 11:11 he says Lazarus has fallen asleep, even though He is nowhere near Lazarus. He arrives 4 days after Lazarus is dead to make NO DOUBT that he is dead and not just sick and then raises him from the dead. Yet, even after this miracle eye witnesses are divided! Amazing how we people need and need and need . . . and yet God still loves and provides.
He was procrastinating. He was busy with his Jesus stuff and kept telling Mary (yes, Lazarus' sister was ANOTHER Mary) that he would get around to helping her brother who was sick.
Also, if the point of the story had been about what kind of life a person would lead after being brought back from the dead, then why does the narrative stop there? There is no story about what happened to Lazarus after he was brought back.
Hon, Jesus was disappointed because His disciples themselves did not tend to Lazarus earlier. Jesus actually wept!
Jhn 11:32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
Jhn 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
Jhn 11:34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
Jhn 11:35 Jesus wept.
Do not really believe Jesus didn't know in advance that He could raise a person physically and live normally post death?
The reason why Jesus let Lazarus die, was to show a miracle of who He was. It was for the families benefit and ours. Not to mention Lazarus.
It was common Jewish belief back then that a person would not revive after being dead 4 days. I think that Jesus knew it would send the Jewish leaders into a frenzy that would eventually lead Him to the cross.
There is one interpretation which says that Jesus knew Lazarus was undergoing a mystical initiation and wasn't really dead.
assuming the story is true, i think Jesus was already well aware of what would happen
i think He was just experiencing what it felt like to lose a friend and couldnt stand it first-hand ..
';Lazarus, Come On Out!';
It was a touching scene. Lazarus was gravely ill. His two sisters, Mary and Martha, sent word to Jesus, who was across the Jordan River: ';Lord, see! the one for whom you have affection is sick.'; (John 11:3) They knew that Jesus loved Lazarus. Would not Jesus want to see his sick friend? Curiously, instead of going to Bethany immediately, Jesus stayed where he was for the next two days.鈥擩ohn 11:5, 6.
Lazarus died some time after the message about his sickness was sent. Jesus knew when Lazarus died, and he intended to do something about it. By the time Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, his dear friend had been dead four days. (John 11:17, 39) Could Jesus bring back to life someone who had been dead that long?
On hearing that Jesus was coming, Martha, a woman of action, ran out to meet him. (Compare Luke 10:38-42.) Touched by her sorrow, Jesus assured her: ';Your brother will rise.'; When she indicated her faith in a future resurrection, Jesus plainly told her: ';I am the resurrection and the life. He that exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.';鈥擩ohn 11:20-25.
Upon arriving at the tomb, Jesus directed that the stone closing its entrance be taken away. Then, after praying aloud, he commanded: ';Lazarus, come on out!';鈥擩ohn 11:38-43.
All eyes were fixed on the tomb. Then, out of the darkness, a figure emerged. His feet and hands were bound with wrappings, and his face was bound with a cloth. ';Loose him and let him go,'; ordered Jesus. The last of the unraveled bandages fell to the ground. Yes, it was Lazarus, the man who had been dead four days!鈥擩ohn 11:44.
Did It Really Happen?
The account of the raising of Lazarus is presented in the Gospel of John as a historical fact. The details are too vivid for it to be a mere allegory. To question its historicity is to question all the miracles of the Bible, including the resurrection of Jesus Christ himself. And to deny the resurrection of Jesus is to deny the Christian faith as a whole.鈥? Corinthians 15:13-15.
Actually, if you accept the existence of God, you should have no problem believing in the resurrection. To illustrate: A person can videotape his last will and testament, and after he dies, his relatives and friends can see and hear him, in effect, as he explains how his estate is to be handled. A hundred years ago, such a thing was unthinkable. And to some people now living in remote parts of the world, the technology of video recording is so beyond comprehension as to seem miraculous. If scientific principles established by the Creator can be used by humans to reconstruct such a visible and audible scene, should not the Creator be able to do far more? Is it not reasonable, then, that the One who created life is capable of re-creating it?
The miracle of Lazarus' restoration to life served to increase faith in Jesus and the resurrection. (John 11:41, 42; 12:9-11, 17-19) In a touching way, it also reveals the willingness and desire of Jehovah and his Son to perform the resurrection.
